Pensioner gets £1 debt threat 13 years om

A Pensioner was threatened with legal action – over a £1 council tax debt from 13 YEARS ago.

Stunned great-gran Jaki Coombe, 64, threw the demand in the bin – because she thought it was a joke.

But Aberdeenshire Council later sent her a final notice saying they’d pass it on to sheriff officers if she didn’t cough up.

Last night Jaki, of Pitcaple, Aberdeenshire – who pays by direct debit – said: "It’s ludicrous.

"I can’t understand why the council would go to all this expense and effort just for a pound. It must have cost at least £30.

"It shows that there is something seriously wrong with their system."

Emma Boon of the TaxPayers’ alliance added: "The council has wasted time and money."

The council has backed down. A spokesman said: "We won’t be pursuing the outstanding balance owed."
